Were you aware that when evidence of the first horse was found, living a lot more than fifty million years back, it looked more like your dog than the mighty animal we are acquainted with these days? People say that it had a body which was only about a single foot high at the shoulder, its head looked far more similar to a dog’s snout plus it had a long tail. Nonetheless, instead of the dog’s feet the original horse referred to as eohippus had toes that looked like hooves instead. It was thought to be the beginning of an evolutionary path that’s been traced all the way up to the beautiful animal that we know and adore these days.
As time passed the horses grew to become bigger and bigger and gradually the toes turned into hooves as the wonders of evolutionary development painted this slow-moving although continuous picture. As you might guess having said that it was certainly not an entirely predictable progression. Although there’s evidence of substantial herds of smaller horses existing about one million years back we also know that many of these early breeds grew to become extinct due to climate adjustments and extreme hunting by humankind.
Actually, it is known that horse populations were totally wiped out in what we now know as North America and that the creatures were basically “reintroduced” into this region by Spanish explorers who brought them with them when they searched for the new world back in the 15th century.
You may think that it is ironic that the horse is so symbolic of the American “Wild West.” If you ask people to arbitrarily think of a picture of the animal in their mind’s eye the chances are that a lot of them would picture someone such as John Wayne riding off into the sunset on a horse, having beaten the bad guys at their own game.
It is fascinating to consider the evolution of the animal and how they have progressed into this kind of superb friend and workhorse. It isn’t totally surprising that many of us are looking for a few horses for sale, so that we can bring them into our very own lives. We are beginning to try to find places to acquire saddles, specific clothing and tack. We’re looking on the Web at inexpensive horseboxes for sale in addition to horse trailers for sale. We are figuring out exactly where we might want to keep the animal, how we would allow for its training and whether or not we would have enough space to ensure it will get the proper type of exercise.
Needless to say, there is lots more to taking care of a horse than there is to a pet dog, although the much bigger animal appears to have originated from a species which was a lot more like our trained family canine pal, at first.
